Commissioned photoseries accompanying the documentary film ‚Las Hermanas de Rocinante‘ by Alexandra Kaufmann.
During the construction boom in Spain, horses became a status symbol. People with no prior experience caring for horses suddenly began to breed them. Then the economic crisis hit and the owners had to get rid of the horses as soon as possible. In 2012 more horses than ever were taken to the slaughterhouse. Within only one year the total number of horses in Spain sank from 750,000 to 660,000. Out of this emergency rescue centres were founded, mostly by women. Similar to the Spanish hero Don Quijote, the women are fighting against windmills and can not count on financial help from the state.
This project portraits one of those rescue centers in Costa Blanca, Spain.
